Three additional states have enacted comprehensive paid family leave laws that will take effect in 2027, bringing the total number of states with such programs to fifteen. The new laws provide up to twelve weeks of partially paid leave for bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill family member.

Family law attorneys note that the patchwork of state laws creates compliance challenges for multi-state employers. Companies must navigate varying eligibility requirements, benefit calculations, and job protection provisions.

Advocates continue to push for a federal paid leave standard that would establish a national baseline for all workers.
