The Federal Trade Commission has launched enforcement actions against five major companies for using deceptive design practices that make it unreasonably difficult for consumers to cancel recurring subscriptions. Fines totaling over $200 million have been proposed.
The so-called 'click to subscribe, call to cancel' model is a primary target, with the FTC insisting that cancellation must be as simple as the original sign-up process. Companies have 90 days to come into compliance.
